The image arrived in my mailbox on the winter solstice. Is the escalator moving down or up? In suspension betwixt the two, the point of return is revealed. Katabasis is not only a descent into the underworld or other dystopian place, but also the promise of homecoming with improved understanding of this earthly existence. A person stumbles down the up escalator, thereby commencing the expedition.
